Guy Howard-Smith presents a collection of jewel-like paintings derived from his recent trips to India and investigations into his fathers mixed-race Anglo-Indian community. These works lean on notions of magic realism espoused by Eurasian authors like Micheal Ondaatje and Alan Sealy to fill the gaps, and create roots that bind identity to place and time. Stories and paint merge and morph European and Indian traditions mirroring the hybrid culture of the people that inspired them. In a wider sense, as Balamohan Shingade observed in his essay for Howard-Smith's 2025 exhibition at Corbans Estate Arts Centre,  "even as it is a personal motivation for Guy to try to recover an understanding of his family’s origins, the broader significance is that it unsettles assumptions of homogeneity built into Pākehā identity."  As such, this is an exhibition that celebrates the mixed and multiple futures of contemporary society in Aotearoa.
