The hand-embroidered pages of Marginalia re-interpret the scribbled reminders, to-do-lists, and doodles of the artist’s daily work diaries. These everyday scrawls and scratchings are detached from their original contexts and meanings through considered mark-making. 

The works themselves take form in the days’ edges: after the 8-5 work, once the housework has been done, when dinner’s over and the dishes washed. Stitches accumulate during the margins of a day in the same way as scribblings accumulate on the margins of a page.

Lisa first learnt the basics of hand embroidery from her Slovenian grandmother at the age of seven. As well as stitching independently for over 40 years, she holds a three year diploma in Embroidery from London City & Guilds and a GradDip of Fine Arts in Textiles from the Dunedin School of Art. She is interested in the ways language and creative practices can reflect, reproduce, and undermine structures of knowledge and power.
